WhatsApp Status Feature: A Guide To Use It Right!

WhatsApp never leaves a stone unturned to hold on its users. The messenger gets timely updated with new features, ranging from the end-to-end encryption to video calling to WhatsApp for desktop, and a lot more. This time, it has come up with the “Status” feature that enable its users to add text, photos, emoji’s, sketches, and videos to their status.

Yes, we know this feature sounds like that of Snapchat, but this surely is ahead of what exists already in other apps because WhatsApp Status Updates are protected with end-to-end encryption. So, let’s get started and check out what else does this new WhatsApp feature brings for us.

How to Get WhatsApp Status Feature?

WhatsApp has already rolled out this feature for everyone. Once your account will have the access to Status, It will automatically show up within the app; no app update required. You will get to know about availability of this feature for your account when:

iOS: The “Contacts” tab gets replaced with the “Camera” icon and the far-left tab reads “Status”.

Android: There will be a “Camera” icon next to the “Chats” tab, next to a new “Status” tab.

WhatsApp Status Privacy Settings

To ensure that its users have full control over who can see the status that they update, WhatsApp has included privacy settings. By default, only your contacts are allowed to view the status that you update. However, you can go to the privacy settings and choose from the available options.

Tap on the “Status” icon on iPhone and there will be a “Privacy” link on the top-left of the screen. For Android users, tap on the menu button and choose “Status Privacy”. There are three options available to choose from:

My Contacts: Any status update that you do can be viewed by your WhatsApp contacts.

My Contacts Except: If there are certain people in the contacts list whom you want to restrict your status viewing, choose this option. This will let you exclude certain contacts that cannot view the status.

Only Share With: And if you are very particular about who can view your status, choose this option and select the members from WhatsApp contacts list.

NOTE: If any changes are done to the privacy settings after updating the status, then the new settings done will have the impact upon the future updates.

How Long the Videos can be?

The WhatsApp Status feature allows its users to record and share a video of up to 45 seconds. If the videos are longer, they will be trimmed after 45 seconds.

How and what can be done with the New Status Feature?

To get started, tap on the “Status” icon. Now, tap on the “My Status” option. You will notice a screen like the one shared below:

  • Tap on the center button to click a photo or hold to create a video.
  • On the left side, there is a “Gallery” icon. Tap on it and you will be taken to the photo gallery of the phone.
  • On the right side, there is a “Camera” icon. Tap on it and the phone camera will be opened. You can use both front and rear camera, accordingly.

Options

You can add a photo/video/GIF (from camera or gallery) and then add a caption (text, emoji) to it. Also, you get the option to crop the photo or draw anything on it. Use these options in the image for the relevant caption.

If you view someone’s status from the contacts list, you can reply to it. For this, open the status and then tab on the “Reply” option at the bottom. Add a reply and tap on the send icon to send the reply. Here is an image showing how you can send a reply and how the corresponding contact will receive it.

How to Delete the Current Status or Forward it?

Simply, tap on the status, next to the “My Status” button. The status will get opened. On the bottom of the screen, tap on the angle up icon and you will see the option to forward or delete the status.

For forwarding the WhatsApp video status, simply tap on the “forward” icon and select the contact.

Using the Camera Option in WhatsApp

Tap on “Camera” and start creating the video. When you tap on the send icon, you can:

  1. Either make the video as WhatsApp status.
  2. Share the video with any of the WhatsApp contacts.

Share Status

NOTE: The status will remain active for next 24 hours, after which it will be deleted automatically. Also, the status created through WhatsApp cannot be saved on the device by any means.

Who is viewing your Status?

The new WhatsApp Status feature will let you find out how many people have seen your contacts. And on swiping, you can watch out as who has seen your status.

Note: While this feature is quite similar to that of Snapchat, but in WhatsApp, you will not get an alert if somebody is taking a screenshot of the status.
